For those of you who already own or have owned a poodle you know what I am talking about in this subject. You can just sit back and smile while I explain it to the unsuspecting new poodle owners who haven't yet experienced poodles and paper.
Poodles are like creative artists when it comes to paper. They love to take a single piece of paper no matter how big or small and turn it into a confetti party.
A poodle will find paper, from amazing places / especially the bathroom, and redecorate your home with it. They take extreme pleasure and pride in their creations.
I left two of my girls in my home while I made a quick trip to my mothers house one weekend. The trip took maybe two hours. When I came home, my house was completely redecorated with huge amounts of paper. My poodle, Beauty, jumped up on my kitchen table and proceded to distribute all the "junk mail" down to Maya my other poodle. They took every news paper and junk mail flyer into my living room and sat down, contentedly, to make tiny pieces of paper out of these big pieces.
When I opened the door to my home I was shocked (this was the first time). I had so much paper on the floor and on my furniture that it made me furious. My girls were wiggling with pride and could not contain themselves. Maya actually had the nerve to lay down by a piece and continue to chew. I wanted to be mad but my girls excitement changed my mood to "unhappy" to clean up the mess.
I have to hide paper now. Sometimes I don't succeed and my poodles find it and become little artists. I am used to this type of behavior. I do not believe it is a poodle being distructive. I don't believe it is an anxiety issue. I fully believe it is like a human taking up knitting or cross stich. Knitting and cross stich is meditative and relaxing. I believe that a poodle turning paper into confetti is their way of relaxation and meditation. They take great care in making each piece tiny. It takes patience and skill for a poodle to make the paper as tiny as they do. If you have ever watched you poodle do this, then you know what I mean.
As annoying as paper shredding is; consider that this is your dogs way of "knitting or cross stich". You may want to find something more meditative such as a kong toy stuffed with peanut butter or some treat to occupy your poodles time.
I don't mean to scare any new poodle owners; but you need to be aware of Poodles and Paper.
For you poodle owners that have already gone through this; again, sit back and smile at the knowledge that some poor person is going to purchase a poodle and experience the "Paper Factor of Poodles".
Take care dear readers and keep the paper away from your poodles!
